GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING AN INTERVIEW

Ø   Obtain the manager's consent before interviewing his staff.
Ø   Arrange the time, place and subject of the interview well before hand so they the interviewee is able to make arrangement regarding his work and to collect together documents and information related to the subject of the interview.
Ø   The interviewee should acquaint and familiar himself with position and duties of the interviewer and also the subject of the interview.
Ø   Put the interviewee at ease by providing a quiet and uninterrupted free environment.
Ø   Listen more than you talk, yet stay enough to keep the discussion going, along the right times,  avoid loading questions aims towards short questions and long answers.
Ø   Interview only one person at a time, this eliminating argument between staff and reduce the difference of the more reserve persons.
Ø   Do not interview a junior staff in the presence of his boss.
Ø   The interviewer must be formal in dressing and speech.
Ø   He must not control the talking but allow the interviewee to talk.
Ø   He must simplify the terminology used to the interviewee.
Ø   He must be polite to and thank the interviewee after the interview.

THE DO AND DON'T OF AN INTERVIEW
The DO include the following:

Ø   Plan the interview.
Ø   Make appointment for the interview
Ø   Be a good listener.
Ø   Use local term.
Ø   Ask question at the right level
Ø   Accepts ideas and hints.
Ø   Be polite.

THE DON'T
The DON’T include the following:

Ø   Do not be late.
Ø   Do not use technical jargon.
Ø   Do not jump into conclusion.
Ø   Do not argue, suggest or criticize.
Ø   Do not interrupt.
Ø   Do not confuse opinion wit facts.
Ø   Do not be personal in your opinion.
