INTRODUCTION TO PENETRATION TESTING

What is penetration testing
Penetration testing also known as ethical hacking or pen testing is an authorized cyberattack on a computer system used to evaluate the security of said system. This test is performed to identify the vulnerabilities and the possibility of unauthorized third parties gaining access to the system. 

Skills required of a penetration tester 
  1. Intermediate computer skills: A penetrating testers skills needs to involve more than just typing and browsing the internet. A penetrating tester needs to be able to use a window command module effectively and be able to create a network.
  2. Networking skills: Hacking or penetration testing is basically an online activity so there is a need for the understanding of basic terms and concepts related to network such as Routers, Packets, Ports, Public and Private IP's, WEP and WPS Passwords, DNS, TCP/IP, Subnetting and many others. 
  3. Database skills: A penetration tester needs to learn and master database management system (E.G MySQL and Oracle in other to understand the techniques that hacker use to penetrate database.
  4. The use of Linux OS: A vast majority of hackers and penetration testers use the linux operating system because unlike the MAC and WINDOWS OS, it allows you to modify or tweak program as you wish. A majority of existing hacking tools and designed to be run on the linux framework.
